Toronto’s Pet Economy

With National Pet Day this Saturday, Toronto’s pet economy, and especially its dogs, comes into sharper focus. As the chart shows, registered dogs across the city have remained consistently high from 2023 to 2026, with popular breeds like Labradors and Golden Retrievers leading the way. Behind that trend is a much broader ecosystem: Toronto CMA may have up to 1,500 to 2,000 pet-related businesses when including pet food, grooming, veterinary care, daycare, training, and walking services. That translates into roughly to 10,000 across the full pet services economy; a sizeable, service-driven sector supporting the growing number of pet-owning households across the city.
